The national final of the BBC Young Writers and Public Speaking
Awards took place on 9 April 2005 at the Peace Palace in the
Hague. It coincided with the Haganum Festival 2005.

Sir Colin Budd KCMG

Colin Budd took up his appointment as British Ambassador to the
Netherlands in April 2001. He was born in 1945, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire,
England. He was educated in Bath and then read History at Cambridge.
Colin Budd entered the British Diplomatic Service in 1967. He has
served in Warsaw, Islamabad, Bonn and Brussels, as well as The Hague
(where he was Head of Political Section from 1980 to 1984). He has
had several spells of duty in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
in London, mostly covering European affairs. Most recently he was
Deputy Under-Secretary of State (Director for European Union and
Economic Affairs). He was awarded the KCMG (Knight Commander of
the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George) in June
2002.
He is married to Agnes Smit and together they have two children,
Francesca and Nicholas.

Wayne Dunsford

Africa
Wayne Dunsford joined the BBC in 1989 in the role of Project Coordinator
with BBC Enterprises looking after an experimental satellite television
project in cooperation with the European Space Agency. The project
was designed to identify opportunities for developing BBC-branded
channels in continental Europe.
Following this project, Dunsford took responsibility for the programming
and presentation of BBC TV Europe, the BBC's first continental European
channel, which was later renamed BBC World Service Television. In
1995 it was replaced by BBC World (international news channel) and
BBC Prime (international entertainment channel), with Wayne Dunsford
as Director of Distribution and Marketing. In 1997 he became General
Manager of the channels.
In 1998 Dunsford took up his current position as Director of Channels
for Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. In this role he is
responsible for driving the growth of existing BBC Worldwide channels
in this region and developing new channel propositions. BBC Prime
is now available across 100 countries and territories and is still
expanding. Dunsford lead his team to create a new channel, BBC Food,
which launched into Africa in 2002, into Europe in 2003 and into
the Middle East in 2005. He went on to develop BBC Japan and a version
of BBC Prime for Asia and launched these channels at the end of
2004.
He is also responsible for channels forming part of BBC Worldwide's
joint ventures with Discovery in the region, and for the management
of BBC ONE and BBC TWO in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Manisha Tank
BBC
World, Presenter World Business Report
Manisha Tank presents World Business Report on BBC World and hourly
business news bulletins. After graduating from Oxford University
in 1997, where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics,
Manisha interned at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She then
freelanced for BBC South before becoming a producer at Reuters Television,
specialists in financial news.
On a posting to New York in 1999 Manisha reported fast-moving markets
live from the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange. After the thrills
of Manhattan, she returned to London as Reuters Europe Markets reporter
based at the London Stock Exchange.
Manisha joined the BBC as the London Stock Exchange reporter for
news programmes in 2001, and went on to co-present news bulletins
between London and New York. She also presents business news on
the domestic network, BBC News 24, and has worked with BBC interactive
teams hosting current affairs discussions.
Away from work Manisha loves to travel, particularly to Asia. She's
also active in the community, mentoring children from ethnic minorities.
Manisha has also travelled abroad in the name of charity on an English
teaching project in the Dominican Republic. She is a board member
of 'Asians in Media', a British forum for young Asians working in
the broadcast and print media. She also enjoys kickboxing and playing
her cello.

Ingrid de Beer
James

Ingrid de Beer graduated from Utrecht University in English language
and literature. Her Master thesis was on the concept of the Seven
Deadly Sins in Medieval English literature. After graduating, she
taught English at a secondary school, which was soon followed by
a teaching position at the James Boswell Institute - Utrecht University.
She has gained extensive experience in teaching presenting and writing
in English to academic (PhD) students. With the development of English
streams in both secondary and higher education she has been involved
in content-integrated language learning and has given many Teaching
in English courses.
Ingrid is a member of several professional organisations for teachers
(IATEFL, TESOL, ACTFL) and regularly visits their conferences. She
is a certified examiner for the IELTS exams and Oral Proficiency
Interviews (ACTFL). She is not only an English language trainer
but has also been head of the Modern Languages Department of the
James Boswell Institute-Utrecht University since 2000.
Away from work, English has also played an important role in Ingrid's
life. From an early age, she encountered English. As a school girl
she had American friends. When she was a Girl Guide leader in Zeist,
she organised many activities with the Girl Scouts of the US Air
Force Base in Soesterberg. Moreover, while visiting relatives and
friends in Canada on numerous occasions she had excellent opportunities
to practise her English.
More recently, Ingrid has been the National Secretary of the Netherlands-England
Society (GNE), already for five years now. One of her tasks is to
assist in the organisation of the Young Writers and Public Speaking
Awards. Two years ago, she accompanied the Dutch finalists to the
International Final of the Public Speaking Competition in London
organised by the English-Speaking Union. On top of that, she very
much enjoys travelling to English-speaking countries. All in all,
Ingrid is both an Anglist and an Anglophile.

Roderik van Grieken
Co-Founder
and Director Nederlands Debat Instituut
After his final exams (A-levels) at the famous British boarding
school Gordonstoun, Roderik van Grieken studied law at the University
of Leiden. During his study he was active in several bodies and
committees of the university, e.g. on the Board of the Faculty of
Law. In Great Britain, already at a young age, Van Grieken became
interested in debate as a sport and as an educational tool and instructional
method. For years he took part successfully in various (inter)national
debate tournaments. Furthermore, he won several prizes during forensic
and rhetorical contests. In 1998 Van Grieken represented the Netherlands
during the World Debating Championships in the Philippines. Since
the beginning of the nineties he has been actively involved in the
organization of various large debating events, such as the European
Debating Championships in 1992. As co-founder and director of the
Nederlands Debat Instituut, Roderik van Grieken has introduced debating
as an educational tool and instructional method in a variety of
organizations and institutions of higher education. In addition,
he is engaged in the development and supervision of debate events,
such as tournaments for specific target groups.
Together with Johan Doesburg he is co-author of Pro en Contra, a
handbook for, and guide to, debating skills for high-school students
(published by the University of Leiden, 2000) and Maatschappijvisie
en beginselen.
His credo is: "One of the greatest values of debating is
its capacity to stimulate the mind."
